Smartphone Free Childhood
At Elvetham Heath Primary School, we are proud to have signed up to be part of Smartphone Free Childhood, a growing movement that supports families and schools to delay children’s access to smartphones and social media.
The initiative recognises the benefits of a childhood focused on real‑world experiences, healthy relationships and wellbeing, rather than constant online engagement.
By joining, we are committing to work alongside parents and carers to promote sensible, age‑appropriate use of technology, encourage offline play and learning, and create a shared culture where children feel supported not to have smartphones too early. This approach helps reduce pressure on children, supports their mental health, and reinforces our commitment to safeguarding and positive development.
We are currently on a 5-year journey to make all schools in Fleet smartphone-free as follows:From 1 January 2026 children in primary, infant and junior schools (Year R to Year 6) will not
be permitted to bring a smartphone to school. This also applies to smartwatches.
bring smartphones onto school premises. With each successive academic year, one more
cohort of secondary school students will not be allowed to bring a smartphone to school.
By 1 September 2030 all Fleet schools will be smartphone-free.
